Why Sumbawa after Bali ? To see the Volcano that shook the world. Mount Tambora.
Mount Tambora is surprisingly little known. Yet on 10 April 1815, it produced the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded human history.
The explosion tore more than 1,000 metres from the mountain and left behind an extraordinary caldera — around 7 kilometres wide and 1 kilometre deep. Ash and aerosols entered the atmosphere, cooling the planet and helping make 1816 famous as “The Year Without a Summer.”
Today, Tambora is remarkably quiet — and remarkably uncrowded.
The most practical climb begins at Doro Ncanga, crossing Sumbawa’s dry savanna by 4WD before reaching camp at around 1,800 metres. After an overnight rest, the summit climb begins around 3am.
You climb through darkness over volcanic ash and gravel until dawn begins to reveal the enormous crater beneath you.
Then the sun rises.
At 2,850 metres, standing on the rim of Tambora is less about conquering another Indonesian volcano than comprehending its scale — and the history beneath your feet.
Yes. It takes more effort than Indonesia’s other more visited volcanoes. That’s precisely why Tambora remains so special.
